The Journey

Belt Grades Explained

ITF Taekwon-Do uses a coloured belt system. Each grade (Kup) requires passing a grading examination. Stripe tests are held in class.

10th Kup

White Belt

The beginning. No knowledge of Taekwon-Do. Pure and open mind.

9th Kup

Yellow Tag

First stripe. Foundation techniques begin. The earth is being prepared.

8th Kup

Yellow Belt

Signifies the Earth from which a plant sprouts and takes root. The foundation of Taekwon-Do is being laid.

7th Kup

Green Tag

Last beginner grade. The plant is beginning to grow. Senior class awaits.

6th Kup

Green Belt

Signifies the plant's growth as Taekwon-Do skills begin to develop. Senior class entry grade.

5th Kup

Blue Tag

Skills developing well. Reaching toward the sky.

4th Kup

Blue Belt

Signifies the Heaven, towards which the plant matures into a towering tree as training progresses.

3rd Kup

Red Tag

Maturing technique. Control and precision become paramount.

2nd Kup

Red Belt

Signifies danger — cautioning the student to exercise control and warning the opponent to stay away.

1st Kup

Black Tag

The penultimate grade. Black Belt is within reach.

II Dan — Boosabeom

National Instructor

The Black Belt is not a destination — it is the beginning of the real journey. I Dan signifies that the student has laid the foundation. The techniques are known; now the true work of mastery begins.

IIII Dan — Boosabeom

National Instructor

The student deepens their understanding of the art. Technique is refined, patterns become expression rather than exercise, and the principles of power and movement are felt rather than just understood.

IIIIII Dan — Boosabeom

National Instructor

Boosabeom — National Instructor. The practitioner begins to give back. Recognised nationally as a qualified instructor, they carry a responsibility to guide others on the same path they have walked.

IVIV Dan — Sabeom

International Instructor

Sabeom — International Instructor. From IV Dan, the practitioner is authorised to conduct gradings. They are no longer just a student of the art — they are a guardian of it, responsible for maintaining its integrity across generations.

VV Dan — Sabeom

International Instructor

Sabeom — International Instructor. At this level the art has become part of the person. Technical mastery is assumed; what sets the V Dan apart is wisdom — the ability to read a student, adapt, and inspire.

VIVI Dan — Sabeom

International Instructor

Sabeom — International Instructor. The senior Sabeom grade. Recognised globally by the ITF. This practitioner has shaped students, clubs, and perhaps whole generations of Taekwon-Do on the international stage.

VIIVII Dan — Sahyeon

Master

Sahyeon — Master. To reach VII Dan is to be acknowledged by the art itself. A lifetime of dedication, contribution and leadership. The Master does not seek the rank — the rank finds those who have truly served.

VIIIVIII Dan — Sahyeon

Assistant Grand Master

Sahyeon — Assistant Grand Master. One of the rarest ranks in ITF Taekwon-Do worldwide. A life lived entirely in service to the art and to those who practise it. Their influence extends far beyond any single dojang.

IXIX Dan — Saseong

Grand Master

Saseong — Grand Master. The pinnacle of ITF Taekwon-Do. There is no higher rank and no higher calling. The Grand Master does not simply practise the art — they are the art. Every student they have ever taught, every club they have ever built, every life changed through Taekwon-Do is their legacy. IX Dan is not awarded for what you can do. It is awarded for what you have left behind.

“Here I leave Taekwon-Do for mankind as a trace of a man of the late 20th century. The 24 patterns represent 24 hours, one day, or all my life.”

— General Choi Hong Hi
Founder of Taekwon-Do  •  IX Dan

Questions

Frequently Asked

Do I need any experience to join?

No experience whatsoever is needed. Everyone starts as a White Belt, regardless of age or background. Our instructors will guide you through every step from day one.

What age can children start?

We welcome students from age 4 upward. Our beginners classes are mixed age, so young children train alongside adults — including their parents — in a safe, supervised environment.

Can I watch before joining?

Absolutely. You are welcome to come along and watch a class before committing to anything. Better still — your first two weeks of training are completely free. Just turn up.

How much does it cost?

Your first two weeks are free. After that, membership fees apply. Please contact us at info@manxtkd.com or call +44 7834 336426 for current pricing details.

Can families train together?

Yes — this is one of the things we are most proud of. All our classes are mixed age. Parents and children can train side by side, progress through the belt system together, and support each other on the mat.

How often are gradings held?

Gradings are held periodically throughout the year when students are assessed by the instructor as ready. Stripe tests are conducted within class. You will never be entered for a grading before you are prepared.

Two Weeks Free. No Commitment.

Just turn up, give it a go, and see what Taekwon-Do can do for you.
